GOODMAN IS VICTIM OF APOPLEXY Well known Physician Stricken Early Yesterday, Succumbs Twelve Hours Later. Dr. Edward Elerslie Goodman, of 814 Eighth avenue, one of the best known and most highly esteemed physicians in the city died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, following a stroke of apoplexy sustained early yesterday morning. Dr. Goodman had been in fairly good health for the past several months, and had retired Monday night in excellent spirits. Shortly after 2 o'clock yesterday morning he was stricken with apoplexy and despite medical aid, he lingered until death claimed him at the hour stated. On September 13, 1849, the deceased was born near Mill Creek, Huntingdon county. He began the study of medicine under his preceptor, Dr. S. L. McCarthy, now of this city. Later Dr. Goodman entered the Jefferson Medical college, Philadelphia, and graduated from that institution in 1874. He first practiced his profession at Allensville, Mifflin county, and later was located at McVeytown for one year. In 1877 Dr. Goodman came to Altoona and has since resided here. He was regarded as one of the most prominent East Side practitioners in the city. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Mary Mifflin, of Philadelphia, who died in 1875. To them one son, Westley Leroy Goodman, of 1608 Fourth street, was born. Later the physician wedded Miss Sarah Prideaux, of Shirleysburg, Huntingdon county, who survives, with one son, Chester P. Goodman. Two brothers, D. T. and J. D. Goodman, both of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. Calvin Noble, of this city; Mrs. W. T. Chilcott, of Mankato, Wan., and Mrs. Mifflin Flemming, of Monango, N. D., also survive. Dr. Goodman was a member of the Second Lutheran church and Altoona conclave, No. 132, Improved Order of Heptasophs. Funeral services will be held at his late home at a time to be announced later and private interment will follow in Greenwood cemetery.
