Another of the old residents of our community passed away yesterday morning at 5 o'clock, when John D. Gorley peacefully fell into the eternal sleep. Mr. Gorley was born in county Tyrone, Ireland, in 1812, and was aged within a few days of 79 years. He came to this country in 1824. He learned the trade of shipbuilding in Philadelphia. In 1835 he came to Hollidaysburg, where he has ever since resided. He engaged in boat building and became a member of the Phalanx Boat company, which did a large business here for many years. In 1868 Mr. Gorley suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which his left side became paralyzed, and last January he received another stroke, from the effects of which he died. In 1837 he was married to Miss Sarah Taff, who, with seven children, namely, Matilda, wife of Thomas Hartsock, of Newport, Kentucky; Hannah, wife of Henry L. Bunker, of this place; William, who is in the west; Sallie, wife of Frank Hartsock, of Yanett, Indiana, and Thomas M., Mary and Amelia, all of this place, survives him. In early life he connected himself with the Presbyterian church and he died in that faith. He was a man of strong convictions and unwavering faith. Patient in suffering and meekly submissive to the chastening hand of affliction, his downward path to the grave was made bright and easy by the kind ministrations of his loved ones. Funeral services will be held at the family residence in East Hollidaysburg this afternoon at 4 o'clock. Interment in the Presbyterian cemetery. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Saturday, April 11, 1891
