All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ Private Russell Gunsallus TYRONE SOLDIER IS KILLED IN ACTION Mrs. Mary Gunsallus of 2109 Lincoln Avenue, Tyrone, a widow, on Monday afternoon received telegraphic information from the War Department, Washington, D, C., that her son, Private Russell Gunsallus previously reported missing in action, had been killed in action in Italy on January 20th. The message informed Mrs. Gunsallus that detailed information would follow by letter. Private Gunsallus was born in Northwood, September 22, 1924, the son of late Walter and Mrs. Mary Gunsallus. He is survived by his mother, and these sisters and brothers: Mrs. James Updyke, Mrs. Fred Bradford, Harris Gunsallus, Mrs. Chester Stonebraker, Elmer Gunsallus, Tyrone and Mrs. Russell Powley, Bellwood. He never married. He attended Tyrone High School and later, was employed in defense work in Niagara Falls, New York. Prior to his enlistment in the service, May 10, 1943, he was employed by a Bellwood contractor. He was trained at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and sent overseas last November. He was a member of the First United Brethren Church and of the Harry Blake Sunday School Class of that church. Private Gunsallus is the fifteenth from Tyrone and near vicinity to have met death in the present conflict. Daily News, Huntingdon, Pa., April 12, 1944, page 8
