He was born December 2, 1817, on a farm near Ivy Side Park, Logan Township, a son of Lewis and Catherine (Lindsay) Gwin. On June 10, 1845 he married Lillie A. Scott [born June 19, 1821, died July 9, 1903], a daughter of John and Rosey (Alexander) Scott. To their union were born the following children: M. Scott, W. A., Anna R., Albert C., John L., and James L. He was an elder in the Presbyterian church, a member of the Republican party and by occupation a county surveyor, Justice of the peace and a Legislator.
