Gwiner, a former resident of Altoona, died at his home at Tipton, Montana county, Mo., aged 64 years. In the year 1864 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Battenberg, who survives him as do also six children as follows: Ard., of Jerseyville, Ill.; David, of Tipton, Mo.; George C. J., a member of the Third United States cavalry now in the Philippines with General Young; Garfield, of Clarksburg Collete, Mo.; Edna and Anna Gwiner, at home. At the time of his death he was president of the Tipton school board, a director of the Tipton bank, a trustee of the Methodist Episcopal church, a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and a republican in politics. During the civil war he was a member of the Pennsylvania reserves. In the Seven Day fight he was wounded and taken prisoner. For eight weeks he was confined to Libby prison, when he was paroled and returned home. He recruited company A, Two Hundred and Fifth regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers, which was taken into service, September 2, 1864, and mustered out June 2, 1865, at the close of the war.
