HAMMEL [photo] Aged Resident Of City Dies After Illness Mrs. Lyle J. Hammel, aged 91, died at 9.40 o'clock last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Morris B. Flegal of 1804 Fifth avenue, after having been in failing health for some time and bedfast since last May. She was born near Roaring Spring Sept. 26, 1859, a daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Otto) Hartle, and moved as a child with her parents to Altoona where she had resided ever since. On Jan. 13, 1881, she married M. J. Hammel, who died Sept. 3, 1925. For many years Mrs. Hammel was active as a pianist in various ladies' groups about the city, playing for the Daughters of Rebekah, Pythian Sisters and Ladies of the G.A.R. for 25 years, and the Dames of Malta for 15 years. She also held various offices in the organizations. She was a member of the Eighth Avenue Methodist church and a former teacher of a girls' Bible class. Mrs. Hammel was pianist at the church of the Open Door for a number of years and sang in and played for the Y.M.C.A. choir, serving also as president of the auxiliary. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Flegal; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Gilden-Barton funeral home after noon tomorrow.
