Internal injuries which he suffered late Sunday night when struck by an automobile resulted in the death this forenoon at the Altoona Hospital of Sewell Hammond, aged 27, a resident of Canan Station in Allegheny township. Hammond expired this morning at 10:20 o'clock in the local hospital from the effects of a ruptured liver. He was admitted to the institution late yesterday afternoon and in addition to internal injuries was suffering from lacerations and contusions of both knees, these injuries being of a superficial nature. While his condition was regarded as rather serious yesterday, his case became alarming late last night and it was found necessary to perform an emergency operation this morning with the hope of saving the young man's life. The driver of the automobile which struck him has not been identified. Hammond was on his way home from Eldorado Sunday night at 11:30 o'clock and was struck and knocked to the side of the highway by an automobile as he was at a point mid-way between Eldorado and Canan Station. The machine was not stopped, the driver proceeding without any attempt to render assistance. The young man's mother, Mrs. Jesse H. Cree, was at the hospital this morning when he died, the family here having been notified early today of the serious turn his condition had taken during the night. Hammond lately had been living in Toledo, O., where he had been employed as a paper mill worker. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Beatrice (Hershell) Hammond and two children, Mary Ann and Richard, all of Toledo. He also is survived by three brothers and two sisters, Eugene, Daniel, Donald, Catherine and Hazel Cree, all at home, in addition to his mother and step-father, J. H. Cree. Coroner C. C. Rothrock of this city was notified and after learning the facts in the case at the hospital launched an investigation to determine the identity of the driver of the machine which hit Hammond. The coroner said he was told that Hammond had intended to leave here today to join his family in Toledo.
