Harbaugh Harpster, 98, Homewood Retirement Center, Martinsburg, Pa., formerly of 1005 27th Ave., Altoona, died Monday morning, Oct. 30, 2000, at the center after a brief illness. She was born Oct. 26, 1902, in Altoona, daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Susan (Hawkesworth) Aurandt. She married Wayne B. Harpster on Aug. 13, 1983, in Port Matilda. He died in March 1996. She was previously married to H. Edwin Harbaugh on June 4, 1925. He died in 1969. Mrs. Harpster was a member of the First Baptist Church, Altoona. She was a teacher at Altoona Area High School, where she taught microbiology for 24 years, retiring in 1968. In addition, she also taught microbiology at the Altoona Campus of Penn State University; and for the nurses at Altoona Hospital, Mercy Hospital and Lewistown Hospital. She was a 1921 graduate of Altoona High School, a graduate of Shippensburg Normal School (University), graduate of Penn State University and its graduate school. Mrs. Harpster enjoyed cooking, reading, writing, crafts and decorating. She was a member of the First Baptist Church Sunday school; member of the Colonel John Proctor Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, YWCA, Altoona Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library and various educational organizations. She was the author of the Aurandt Panorama 1555-1983. Surviving are a grandniece: Barbara Hileman of Altoona and a grandnephew: Larry Edwards of Altoona. Mrs. Harpster was preceded in death by a brother, George A. Aurandt and a niece, Eileen Edwards. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, October 31, 2000, and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 1, 2000, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Avenue, Altoona. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000 at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc. by the Rev. Charles F. Kiloski.
