HART Daniel B. Hart, of Altoona, husband of Jennie Stoudnour Hart, former Martinsburg resident, died at his home at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, July 26, following a short illness. He was well known in the Martinsburg community where he had many friends. He was born in Altoona on May 7, 1874, a son of Peter and Clarinda Lindsay Hart, and had resided in the city all his life. He was employed for many years by the P. R. R., but had retired in 1939. He was a member of the First Church of the Brethren, Altoona. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jennie Stoudnour Hart, two brothers and two sisters, David M. Hart of Akron, O.; Harry J. Hart, Mrs. Robert Smith, and Mrs. Charles Smith, all of Altoona. His widow is a sister of Mrs. John H. Kensinger, Mrs. Mahlon B. Wineland, and Samuel B. Stoudnour of Martinsburg, and the late Lee B. Stoudnour of Roaring Spring was also her brother. Private funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in charge of his pastor, Rev. W. S. Long, and interment was made in Oak Ridge Cemetery. clipping [d. July 26, 1941] ________ ELLIS HART At 1.20 o'clock Saturday afternoon Mr. Ellis Hart, an aged and respected citizen of Duncansville, died at his home of diseases incident to advanced years. Mr. Hart was born on September 3, 1820, at Eldorado, and was the son of Ezra and Sara (Westover) Hart, deceased. He was twice married. His first wife, Hettie Kemberling, died in June, 1873, leaving these children: Alex L., of Omaha, Neb., Ezra B., of Lakeville, California; S. K., of Altoona, and Ellis W., of Youngwood, PA. Mr. Hart's second wife was Mrs. Mary Myers, widow of Daniel Myers. She survives as do also these stepchildren: Alfred B., Abraham L. and Daniel G., of Altoona; Mrs. M. F. Beamer, Mrs. Jennie Richardson and Mrs. I. C. Hess, of Duncansville. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Brubaker, of Carson Valley; Mrs. Margaret Stoner, and Mrs. Isaac Maines of Altoona, and two brothers, Oliver Hart, of Kansas, and Peter S. Hart, of this city. In his early life he united with the First Baptist church, of Hollidaysburg, was always a consistent member and was a reg..(unreadable)... until his health failed. He....(unreadable)...he was enrolled at Camp Crossman, September 5, 1861 as a private in company I, Eighty-fourth regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. Sometime afterward he was promoted to sergeant. On June 9, 1862, he was wounded in the left leg by a shell at Port Republic. The same day he was taken prisoner and walked ninety miles without having his wound dressed. He escaped and was sent to a Philadelphia hospital. On September 17, 1862, he was honorably discharged from the service of his country, being unfit for further field duty. He faced the enemy in battles of Hancock, Bath, Greenbriar, Cedar Springs, Winchester, Front Royal, and Port Republic. He was elected to several offices by the people of his district, in his active days, and was enthusiastic in any work for the welfare of Duncansville and its people. He was a man of a most happy temperament, his company being sought by both young and old. At the time of his death he held the distinction of being the oldest member of the Hollidaysburg Baptist church. He was also a member of William G. Murray post No. 39, Grand Army of the Republic. clipping [d. March 12, 1904] ________ ELLIS W. HART A native of Duncansville, died at 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning at his home in Youngwood after several weeks illness. He was born on July 5, 1865. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. Surviving are one brother and one sister, Alex hart of Nebraska and Mrs. I. C. Hess of Duncansville; several nieces and nephews in the west and a nephew, Willard H. Hart of Allegheny township. Interment will be made here. Interment in Alto Reste Cemetery. Altoona Mirror, April 5, 1940 ________ PETER S. HART Peter S. Hart, a veteran of the Civil war and a former city assessor, but retired for the past score of years, died at 5 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 1818 Eighth avenue, of hardening of the arteries, aged 79 years. He was in failing health for the past several months and was bedfast several weeks. He was a lifelong resident of Blair county and was born June 2, 1842, at Sugar Run, near Canan station, the son of Ezra and Mary Westover Hart, and came to Altoona early in life. He served a four year enlistment in the Civil war and enlisted in Company I, 84th Pennsylvania volunteers, and later with Company K of the same regiment. He was twice wounded in action, the second wound shattering his right shoulder, the veteran carrying a deep scar on the shoulder during his lifetime. His first wound was suffered in the fighting of Cold Harbor and the second in the action at Petersburg. He was a Democrat in politics and was twice elected to the office of assessor in the city of Altoona, serving terms in the early 90's. During his early life he was active in lodge circles and was the organizer of a lodge of Odd Fellows in this city. He was also engaged in the real estate business for several years and in the grocery business on three occasions. He was united in marriage at Oil City on Oct. 30, 1872, to Miss Clarinda L. Lindsay, the ceremony being performed by Rev. B. B. Boyd, a Methodist minister. Surviving are the widow and five children as follows: Daniel B. of Altoona, David M. of Akron, O., and Harry J., Mrs. Clara M. Smith and Mrs. Mary E. Smith, all of this city. Also by three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral and interment will be strictly private on Monday a fternoonfrom the residence. The remains can be viewed from 7 to 10 o'clock this and tomorrow evenings. Altoona Tribune, January 29, 1921
