Passed Away at His Home in Altoona Yesterday Afternoon A MUCH RESPECTED CITIZEN [Born in] Germany in 1819 He Came to America in 1846 - He First Located in Hollidaysburg and Later in this City. FUNERAL TO-MORROW AFTERNOON At 1.20 o'clock yesterday afternoon Chistian Hauser, sr., one of this city --?-- and esteemed citizens, died at his home, 1211 Seventeenth street, of diseases incident to old age. He had not been in the best of health for several --?-- and his last illness dated from September 10 and though death was not unexpected, it was a shock to the family. Christian Hauser, sr., was born May --?-- 1819 in Aldingen, county of Spaich--?--, Wurtemberg, Germany. His father died when he was a mere boy, and --?-- receiving a common school education he learned the baker trade. He followed his chosen trade in different parts of Germany and Alsace, and in the spring --?-- he left his native home for America. He arrived here after a long --?-- voyage on a sailing vessel. Making his way to Hollidaysburg he --?-- work at the Allegheny furnace, --?-- went to work on the old Portage railroad. Several years later he became a partner in one of the now de---?-- warehouses at Hollidaysburg; he operated for about two years the old --?-- brewery at that place. Moving --?-- in 1870 he bought the warehouse and flour and feed store on Eleventh avenue near Seventeenth street. A [few] years later he bought the C. C. --?per flouring mill on Eighth avenue and Sixteenth street and operated it under the firm name of C. Hauser & Son. A number of years ago he became afflicted with rheumatism and retired from active life. Deceased was twice married. His first wife was Miss A. Marie Schoen, died --?--, 1864. His second wife was Margaret Yeager, and she preceded him to the grave March 18, 1899. He is survived by these children: Christian; Martin, Mrs. Sophia Hammel, Mrs. --?-- Coppersmith and Mrs. Margaret --?-- Masterson, of Altoona, --?--, Ida.; James, of Tacoma, --?--, and Valentine, of Pittsburg. [The] deceased was a man of great business abilities, and a kind husband and --?-- and always ready to assist the --?--. He died in peace with God and --?-- and in hope of a happy [hereaft]er. The funeral will leave the --?-- 10 o'clock Friday afternoon and [proceed] to St. James' Evangelical Lutheran church, where services will be [celebra]ted. At their conclusion the re[mains] will be taken to Hollidaysburg for [inter]ment. Morning Tribune, Thursday, December 7, 1899 HOLLIDAYSBURG HAPPENINGS. The funeral cortege of Christian Hauser, an old time resident and business man of Hollidaysburg, will arrive from Altoona this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Six trolley cars will convey the mourners and sympathizing friends. The Free Masons having previously assembled in their hall will meet the cars at the corner of Allegheny and Wayne streets and proceed to the Lutheran cemetery, where interment will be made.
