In recognition of his work in the field of cellulose chemistry, Dr. Haywood was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Centre College in 1952. He began his career with the Paper Company in 1914 when he was employed as a helper in the Company Laboratory at Luke, Maryland, after graduating from High School. For years, Dr. Haywood worked under Dr. Drewsen's direction in the New York Laboratory of the Company. For four years during this period, he attended night science courses at Columbia University. In 1930, he returned to Luke to direct the Company's research in the conversion coating of paper, a new field. His investigations led to two patents on the Bar Method of coating, now widely used in the industry. His range of activity grew to cover the entire field of cellulose chemistry, and in 1953, he was named Director of The Luke Research Laboratory of the Company. He was promoted to Technical Assistant for all of the Company's Research and Development activities in March 1955, with headquarters at the Luke Mill.
