Helsel, a well known resident of Blair county, died suddenly at his home near Reservoir station at 7.30 o'clock yesterday morning, his death being attributed to a stroke of apoplexy which was suffered only a few minutes before. The deceased was born Aug. 14, 1857, near Roaring Spring, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Helsel, both deceased, and spent almost his entire lifetime in Blair county. He was one of a family of twelve children and is the ninth member of the family passing away. He suffered during the past twenty years with rheumatism and dropsy and was able to do but little work in that time. Prior to that he followed the occupation of mill-worker and farmer. Of late years only odd jobs of light work occupied his time. He was exceptionally fond of hunting and fishing and was well acquainted with plants, trees and all wild life. From the knowledge gained by being in the woods and among nature to a considerable extent and by observing the activities of wild animals he learned to forecast coming events, such as severe or mild winter weather and many other conditions with great accuracy. He was married 43 years ago to Miss Lucy Emma Hess, the ceremony being performed in Fulton county, her home county. The wife survives, also the following children: Elwood, in Michigan; James, at home; Mrs. Mary Ridenour of Akron, O.; Marshall of Duncansville; Howard of Lima, O., Mrs. Susanna Wineland of Foot of Ten, and Mrs. Lucy Brawley of Reservoir. Five children preceded him to the grave. He is survived also by two brothers and one sister, Levi Helsel and Mrs. Margaret Diehl [Dick - ed.] of Roaring Spring and Samuel Helsel of East Freedom. He was a member of the Albright Church of the Brethren, where the funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Albright cemetery. The body has been brought to the home of his son Marshall Helsel, in Duncansville, where it can be viewed at any time and from which place the funeral cortege will leave at 1:30 Sunday afternoon. Although Mr. Helsel complained of not feeling well Wednesday night, his condition was not thought to be serious. Following the attack Thursday morning he expired before assistance could be secured from the home of his daughter, adjoining the Helsel home. Altoona Mirror, Friday, 3 July 1925
