Auker, 89, Penn Knoll Village, Everett, formerly of 146 Fifth Ave., Duncansville, died Tuesday night, May 25, 1999, at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born July 30, 1909, in Duncansville, the daughter of the late Austin and Mary (Stom) Helsel. She was twice married. First she married James A. Glass April 11, 1928, in Cumberland Md. He died Feb. 7, 1962. She then married Melvin K. Acker June 29, 1965, in Winchester, Va. He died in 1992.Mrs. Acker was a member of Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker. Surviving are two sons: Robert E. Glass of Duncansville RD and Jack A. Glass of Maple Hollow; a sister, Ella M. Boucher of Duncansville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. HELSEL Carl D. Helsel, 73, of the Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg, formerly of 522 E. 26th Ave., died early: Monday morning, Nov. 7, 1994, at the home, following an extended illness. He was born March 16, 1921, in Roaring Spring, the son of Clarence and Ella Irene (Clapper) Helsel. He married Minnie Rollason. She died in 1983. Mr. Helsel was a member of Christ Second Lutheran Church. He retired as a self-employed floor covering installer and was owner of Carl's Modern Interior until 1983. Mr. Helsel was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Murray Appleman American Legion Post, Roaring Spring. He was an avid sports fan. Surviving are two daughters: Debbie Carothers and Joanne, both of Altoona; a brother, Gene of Tucson, Ariz.; and two grandchildren. Brubaker on Sept. 1, 1928, in Cumberland Md. Surviving are his wife, two children, Gene of Carson Valley and Mrs. Janice of Martinsburg RD; six grandchildren, and four brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ethel Imler, Mrs. Dorothy Brubaker and Ellsworth of Duncansville RD, and Edward of Altoona. Altoona Mirror, June 14, 1977 ________ DAVID A. HELSEL Of near Bellwood, died at 1:15 p.m. yesterday in the Altoona Hospital where he was admitted Jan 1, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Hopewell on April 4, 1876, a son of Henry I. and Susan (Ford) Helsel, and on Sept. 3, 1897, married Laura Grives, who died in 1957. Surviving are seven children, Raymond of Juniata Gap, Henry of Birdsboro, Mrs. Esther Wertz, David Jr. and Mrs. Martha Spidle of the city, Clifford, with whom he resided, and Mrs. Albert Zeiders of Lewistown; 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Martha Trevarthan of Clinton, Ind., and Mrs. Mary McGee of Bedford. He was of the Methodist faith and retired in 1941 from the P. R. R. as a carpenter after 35 years of service. Friends will be received in the Johnson Mortuary, Bellwood, after 7 p.m. today. Altoona Mirror, January 22, 1966 ________ ELLSWORTH HELSEL Mr. Helsel, 71, of Box 481, Carson Valley, Duncansville RD 1, died at 10:52 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 1985, in Mercy Hospital. Mr. Helsel retired from Forsht Dairy, Duncansville, in 1975. He had also worked in the Juniata shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad and was custodian at the Allegheny No. 2 school for 22 years. He was born Feb. 10, 1914, in Duncansville, the son of James and Minnie (Browell) Helsel, and May 15, 1937, in Duncansville married Hazel May Brubaker. Surviving are his wife, five children: Alys Shaw of East Freedom RD, Dale of Hollidaysburg, and Galen, Lilly Nofsker, and Alma Smith of Duncansville RD; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister Dorothy Brubaker of Duncansville RD. Mr. Helsel was a member of the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren, where he served as a trustee. He was born March 26, 19000, at Langdondale, Bedford county, a son of James E. and Minnie (Browell) Helsel and was married to Olive Brubaker in the twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren by Rev. B. F. Waltz. Surviving are the widow and the following children: Mrs. Charles Hoffman and Carl of Altoona, Mrs. Roy Stevens of Bridgeton, N. HELSEL Mr. Helsel, 72, of 419 poplar St., Roaring Spring, died at 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 1990, at his residence. Mr. Helsel retired as an assistant credit manager from the home office of New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. in 1983, after 27 years' service. He was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Roaring Spring, the son of Clarence W. and Ella I. (Clapper) Helsel. Surviving are two brothers: Gene of Southbound Brook, N.J.; and Carl of Hollidaysburg. Mr. Helsel was a member of Bare Memorial Church of God, Roaring Spring, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class and formerly served as a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Murray-Appleman American Legion Post, Roaring Spring, and Blair County Genealogical Society. Mr. Helsel was an Army veteran of World War II. HELSEL A VETERAN OF THE MEXICAN WAR DEAD Henry S. Helsel, Long Time Resident of Blue Knob, Passed Away at Portage Word was received at Blue Knob on Saturday of the death of Henry S. Helsel, who died at Portage, where he had been staying for about two years. Mr. Helsel has been a resident of Blue Knob practically all his life until going to Portage and many friends there were surprised and grieved to learn of his death. He was a veteran of the Mexican war and of the Civil War. When the United States last had reason to need her sons, Mr. Helsel was ready to volunteer, but his age made it impossible. He was 87 years old at death. Surviving are these children: George, Mrs. Catherine Plummer and Mrs. Margaret Lantz, of Portage; Jacob, of Jersey Shore; Robert, of Montana; Mrs. Etta McCracken, of Osceola Mills; Mrs. Elizabeth Roudabush. His wife died thirty years ago. The funeral service will be held at the Mt. Moriah United Brethren church, at Blue Knob, at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Interment in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Altoona Tribune, Monday, December 21, 1914 ________ JAMES E. HELSEL Prominent resident of Carson Valley died at his home there Thursday evening at 7.50 o'clock, death attributed to complications. Mr. Helsel was born in Bedford county, Oct. 23, 1874, the son of Henry and Mrs. Sarah Helsel, both now deceased. He followed farming most of his life. He was united in marriage on March 17, 1895, with Miss Minnie Browell, who survives, with the following children: Mrs. Hileman Imler of Duncansville, George H. Helsel and Mrs. B. D. Hoover of Duncansville, R. D. 1, Lloyd J., Clarence, Thelma, Edith, Ellsworth, Edward, and Dorothy, all at home, and these brothers and sisters: J. C. Helsel of McKee, David A. of Newry, C. F. of Altoona, Robert of Hopewell, Mrs. Martha Trevarthan of Universal, Ind., Mrs. Mary C. McGee of Wood, Pa. He was a member of Hicks Memorial Methodist church in Duncansville. She was born April 6, 1930, in Woodland, Clearfield County, the daughter of Porter and Pearl (Lansberry) Wiser, and Sept. 28, 1950, in Winchester, Va., married Carl G. Helsel. Helsel, Sr. He was twice married, first to Evelyn A. Putt, who died Aug. 28, 1967, and then to Gaynelle Davis on July 8, 1968. Surviving are his wife; eight children, Audrey Gates of Saxton; Margaret Hockenbrock of Broad Top City; Joanne Moffet in Maryland; Bonnie Mateja, Swedesburg; Kathleen Cassner of Norristown, Montgomery County; Robert A. Hudson Ave., died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, following an extended illness. He was born July 7, 1924, in Altoona, the son of Raymond A. and Dorothy R. (Yon) Helsel. He married Bertha M. Lilly Dec. 12, 1959, in Altoona. She died Sept. 25, 1933. Mr. Helsel was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church, Streetsboro, Ohio. He retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years of service and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Helsel had been employed as a set-up man for Anchor Fasteners, Bedford Heights, Ohio, for 17 years. He attended Altoona High School. Mr. Helsel had served as commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2629, Aurora, Ohio, and was a member of Altoona Eagles. Surviving are a daughter, Gloria Matthews of Bedford, Ohio; a son, Monty of Cleveland; a sister, Mildred Fluke of Dundee, N. Y.; and a brother, Raymond of Riviera, Ariz. She was born Oct. 21, 1932, in Cross Keys, Duncansville RD, a daughter of the late George and Olive (Brubaker) Helsel. She was a member of Carson Valley Church of the Brethren, Duncansville RD, and attended God's Missionary Church, Roaring Spring. She also attended the Roaring Spring Senior Center. Surviving are three children: James Kaufman of Altoona and Linda J. McNally and Becky S. Filer, both of Roaring Spring; four grandchildren; one great-grand-son; a brother, Richard L. Helsel of Altoona; and two sisters: Leda Battisti of Altoona and D. Lavada Stevens of Stuart, Fla. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Paul Kaufman, on Dec. 19, 1959.
