FUNERAL OF THOMAS R. HEWIT

  The remains of Thos. R. Hewit, son of Mrs. Emma Hewit, widow of David 
Hewit, dead, of this place, were brought home last week from the Army 
of the Rappahannock, and were interred on Sunday afternoon, in the 
Presbyterian cemetery.  The deceased was a young man - not yet of age, 
and was a member of Capt. Crozier's company, 62d Regiment.  He left our 
town in the fall of '61 under the call of the President for 600,000 
men, and being a young man of heavy frame, and patriotism and 
intelligence, he soon became a valuable member of his company.  He was 
ever present in the discharge of his duties, and won the affection not 
only of his comrades, but the esteem of his officers.  Through fatigue, 
hardship and exposure, he at last fell a prey to disease, and though he 
died in the hospital, he died as much for his country, as did the 
gallant spirits that went out from this uncertain life upon the bloody 
fields of Fredericksburg and Murfeesboro.
  His remains were taken to the M. E. Church, whence, after appropriate 
religious services, they were taken to the grave yard.  Van Tries' 
cornet band, a military escort of returned volunteers, and a large 
concourse of citizens were present, and followed his remains to their 
last resting place.
  "Tom" was a gallant boy, and whilst he has a large circle of friends 
to mourn his death, his many companions will long cherish his name with 
feelings of kindness and regret.  Peace to his ashes.
