He was aged 48 years, 10 months and 20 days. Samuel Hicks was a son of P. N. and Mary Hicks, who for many years were well known residents northwest of town, now both deceased. He was born at Maria Forge January 1, 1869, afterwards removing to this place with his parents. About 28 years ago he left this place and located in the west. He was employed as an engineer on the Northern Pacific railroad and had been connected with that road for the past fifteen years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, also had high standing in the Masonic order, being a Thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason. The deceased was never married and is survived by one sister and four brothers: Mrs. George Liebegott, residing northwest of town; W. F. and P. N. Hicks, of Monmouth, Illinois, A. C. Hicks, of this place, and G. W. Hicks of Galesburg, Illinois. His body was brought east, arriving here Sunday evening and taken to the home of his brother Curtain. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. B. Littleton. Interment in Fairview cemetery. The body of Samuel Hicks was accompanied from Montana by Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Wilkins, close personal friends of the deceased, the former a brother engineer. William F. Hicks, of Monmouth, and George W. Hicks, of Galesburg, Illinois, also came east to attend the funeral of their brother. Martinsburg Herald, November 30, 1917
