A Man Walking on the Railroad Knocked Down and Killed. It is a well known fact among railroad men that accidents always run in bunches and last night was one of the worst of its kind. About 10 o'clock last night a poor German laborer named Charles Hiller was struck and killed while walking on the track a short distance west of Altoona. With three companions he was on his way to Pittsburgh. At McGarvey's station Hiller ran ahead of his comrades about one hundred feet they supposed, as he was lost in the darkness. A snapper engine was returning down the mountain and struck him, tearing the scalp from his head. He was found by his comrades after they walked a little further along and was lying by the side of the road. They picked him up and brought him to Altoona where he was carried into McCormick's office in an insensible condition. His head presented a terrible sight, but the poor German lad, who was dying in a foreign land, knew no pain; he never regained consciousness, but passed away shortly after 12 o'clock this morning. His three companions attended him to the last. The body was this morning carried to Undertaker Tipton's, where it will be prepared for burial. An inquest was held this morning by Coroner Humes and a verdict of accidental death was rendered. The body will be buried at the almshouse. The companions of the dead boy last night wrote a letter notifying his parents in Germany. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Friday, November 19, 1880
