On Monday afternoon Mr. Matthew Hoey, one of Altoona's oldest residents, died at his home, No. 2405 Union avenue. His death was the result of an attack of la grippe, which first affected him some time ago, and which, together with the effects of advanced age, made his recovery impossible. He was aged 78 years and 11 months. He was born in County Louth, Ireland, where his younger days were spent, but he came to this country over fifty years ago, where he has ever since resided. He lived in Hollidaysburg for many years, and came to this city over thirty years ago. He was a stone cutter by trade and worked on the stone foundations of the first round house built in this city. He had a vast fund of reminisces of notable events which have occurred in this county for the last half century, and was a democrat of the staunchest type. Among his pleasant recollections of the past was a meeting which he had with that patron saint of democracy, General Andrew Jackson, who was on a journey through Blair county. Mr. Hoey was a man of kindly and generous impulses, friendly and affectionate. He was a member of the Roman Catholic church, and, fortified with the last sacraments of his religious belief, he passed away. Besides many friends in this city and elsewhere, he leaves to mourn his death one son, Mr. Theobald Hoey, and four daughters, all of this city. Mr. Hoey's wife preceded him to the grave a few years ago. The funeral will take place on Thursday morning, leaving his late home at half-past 8 o'clock and proceeding to Ninth avenue and Twenty-third street, where the body will be placed on the branch train. Accompanied by the relatives and friends, it will be taken to Hollidaysburg, where high mass of requiem will be celebrated in St. Mary's church. Rev. Father Smith, his pastor, will accompany the cortege to Hollidaysburg. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Wednesday, February 3, 1892, page 1
