Mrs. Mary Hoffman, a prominent resident of Martinsburg and mother of Professor D. L. Hoffman, principal of the Adams school in this city, died suddenly at her home yesterday afternoon at 3.45. Mrs. Charles H. Hoffman of this city, wife of another son, and two children had spent the day at Martinsburg, and were bidding goodbye preparatory to taking the evening train for Altoona, when Mrs. Hoffman suddenly swooned. She was caught in the arms of her daughter-in-law. The husband was near at the time and the two helped the stricken woman to a chair where she expired. Death was due to heart trouble. Mrs. Hoffman, while in failing health for some time, has been able to perform her usual duties about the house and yesterday at noon ate heartily. During the day, because of the visit of her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren, she seemed to be unusually happy. The deceased was born at Woodbury, Bedford county, Jun 12, 1842, being past 72 years at the time of her death. She was the daughter of John and Mary Keith, members of pioneer families of Morrisons cove. In the year 1863 she was united in marriage to Isaac Hoffman. The couple for many years resided in the vicinity of Woodbury and only a few years ago removed to Martinsburg. The husband and these children survive: Professor D. L. Hoffman and Charles H. Hoffman, and Mrs. W. W. Keagy, wife of the proprietor of the Keagy's Clothing store, all of this city, and Mrs. Jacob Hartman of Martinsburg. The following brothers and sisters survive: Professor D. S. Keith, for many years superintendent of the Altoona school district; Jacob S. Keith of Nebraska, Mrs. S. S. Horton of Martinsburg and Mrs. George Stover of Roaring Spring. A number of grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. In early life Mrs. Keith [sic] became identified with the Church of God of Woodbury. Her life was an exemplification of the Christian spirit and she typified the highest standards of wifehood and motherhood. The funeral will be held Sunday forenoon with services at the Church of the Brethren at Martinsburg at 10 o'clock. Interment in Fairview cemetery at Martinsburg will follow.
