HOGUE Nellie Hogue, Active in City, Dies in Florida Mrs. Nellie T. Hogue, 88, active in Altoona community life for decades before she moved to Florida in 1946, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1970, at Winter Park hospital. She was the widow of Dr. John D. Hogue, who died in 1944. She was born in Bedford Aug. 8, 1882, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Virginia (Neall) Trout. Salutatorian of the Altoona High School class of 1900, she as graduated from Oswego, N.Y., Normal Schoolabd taught school in Troy and New York City from 1903 to 1910 when she returned to Altoona and married Dr. Hogue in 1911. After her three daughters were raised, Mrs. Hogue gained her B.S. degree in education from Penn State in 1942. Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Martha Duncan and Mrs. Elizabeth Faust of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Mrs. Sara Hoffman of Farmington, Mich.; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a sister and brother, Mrs. John G. Shaffer of Altoona and Thomas James Trout of Harrisburg. Mrs. Hogue was an organizer for the Altoona Girl Scouts, serving as commissioner during growth from 1 to 42 troops; organizer of the Parent-Teacher Association as it grew from 1 to 42 schools and president of both Altoona and County PTA Councils; organizer of the Altoona Story League; a member of the first Altoona Community Chest board, and first president of Rowan American Legion Auxiliary. She was project chairman for the League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women, board member of Altoona Little Theater, member of the auxiliaries of both Altoona and Mercy Hospitals and project planning committee of the Works Progress Administration. She worked as a public assistance visitor. After 1945, Mrs. Hogue was active in study of problems of the aging, attending conferences on gerontology across the country. After moving South, she was co-chairman, Community Service for the Aged. Committee of the Orlando AAUW. She was a member of Altoona's First Presbyterian Church from 1911-1946 and then of First Presbyterian of Orlando. Services were held in Orlando. Altoona Mirror, Friday, September 11, 1970
