Hoover, 83, 1200 Adams Ave., died Monday morning, Feb. 28, 2000, at his residence, following a brief illness. He was born April 10, 1916, in Hastings, the son of the late Frank J. and Rose Elizabeth (Yeager) Hoover. He married Mary M. Sullivan March 2, 1946, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Altoona. Mr. Hoover was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He retired from the shipping and receiving department of Conrail in 1976, with 35 years service. Mr. Hoover was a graduate of Altoona High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving with the 445th Bomb Group, 700th Bomb Squadron, and receiving the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon with five Bronze Stars and Distinguished Unit Badge. Mr. Hoover enjoyed hunting and fishing and woodworking. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Betsy Romano Appleyard and Diane both of Altoona; a brother, Blair of Hollidaysburg, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Stevens Mortuary Inc. HOOVER - The funeral of Matthew E. Hoover of 1200 Adams Ave., will be held with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Committal will be made at Alto-Reste Park. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., where a vigil for the deceased will be held Wednesday. He is survived by three grandchildren: Terry Kennedy-Cherry of Altoona, Rick Kennedy of Altoona and Rob Kennedy of Martinsburg; three great-grandchildren: Jessie Kennedy, Broc Kennedy and Kailey Fornari, all of Altoona; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald; and a sister and niece, Agnes Leckie and Doris Jean Leckie, both of Washington, D.C.
