Altoona Mirror, March 10, 1937 ________ ALMA MARIE HOOVER CHILD IS FATALLY INJURED BY AUTO Alma Marie Hoover, Aged 5, of Cross Keys, Succumbs to Skull Fracture at Mercy Hospital. Struck by an automobile while crossing the Sixth avenue highway in front of her home just east of Cross Keys about 1.40 o'clock Saturday afternoon, Alma Marie Hoover, aged 5, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brice Hoover, died at the Mercy hospital at 11.50 o'clock Saturday night of a fracture of the skull. The child was struck by an automobile driven by Hugo Perrine, aged 27, of 420 Oak street, Tyrone, who took the child's mother to the hospital following the accident and gave his name to the hospital authorities. The injured girl was taken to the hospital by Miss Mary Lou DeChant of the Cresson state sanitarium, who arrived on the scene almost immediately after the accident. The child's father was serving as a pallbearer at the funeral of Clarence Earl Weight, former Altoonan who was drowned in Lake Erie last Wednesday, was notified of the accident in the city and went directly to the hospital. According to members of the Hoover family, Alma and a brother, Elvin, aged 7, were crossing the highway to join another brother, William aged 8, at the home of a neighbor. The two children had waited for two cars traveling west to pass but started across the highway without seeing the Perrine car approaching from the west. Elvin was behind his sister and not in the path of the automobile. This morning he told his family that Alma had thrown up her arm when the automobile struck her and apparently held onto the bumper of the machine. When the car stopped within a short distance she was taken from beneath the front of the machine. The accident occurred almost directly in front of the Myers greenhouses along the highway. The child was born in Cross Keys on Nov. 13, 1928, a daughter of Brice and Minnie (Helsel) Hoover. Surviving are her parents and three brothers, Elvin, William, and Wayne, all at home. She attended the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren and Sunday School. The body may be viewed at the home. Funeral services will be held at the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren at 2.30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be made in the church cemetery. The accident is the first fatality involving a motor vehicle to occur thus far in the second half of the year.
