All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ JOHN WILLIAM HOWE, A well-known resident of Tyrone, died of a complication of diseases Friday evening at 7.30, at his home, 1115 North Logan avenue. The deceased was born at Mifflintown, Pa., October 8, 1854. In his 17th year he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania railroad company as telegraph operator and was shortly transferred to Harrisburg, where he remained until 1875, when he was sent to Tyrone, and a year later was appointed passenger agent at Tyrone station, which position he held until 1881, when he resigned to associate himself with John K. and Daniel P. Ray, jr., in the management of the Bald Eagle tannery and remained until it was merged with the United States leather company. During 1897 and up until July 1, 1898, he was general manager of the Tyrone shoe company. In May, 1899, he went to Pittsburg, where he was interested in the Keystone axle company. In April, 1901, he returned to Tyrone and became bookkeeper at the North Star tannery, where he remained until 1904, when he was appointed local agent for the New York life insurance company, which he retained until his death. At Tyrone, August 1, 1877, he was united in marriage to Miss Catharine Elizabeth Ray, by Rev. E. H. Yocum. To this union four children were born. With the mother, the following survive the deceased: Mrs. Lynford D. C. Tyler of Philadelphia, Jesse Burket Howe, a student at Jefferson medical college, and Helen, at home. He is also survived by his mother, Lavinia J. Howe, and two sisters, Mrs. John I. Painter and Miss Jennie Howe, all of Washington, D.C., and one brother, Jesse K. Howe of Harrisburg. Mr. Howe was a past master of Tyrone lodge, No. 494, Free and Accepted Masons, and a member of Tyrone council, No. 943, Royal Arcanum. He held the position of burgess of Tyrone for a three year term - 1894 to 1897. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, services to be held at the late home of the deceased at 2.30 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. John H. Daugherty, assisted by Rev. Ezra H. Yocum, D.D., of Lewistown. Interment will follow in Grand View cemetery. Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa., Monday Evening, April 1, 1907
