HUEBNER KILLED DURING FIGHT, JULY 26 Private Leonard William Huebner, formerly of this city, but who worked in Pittsburgh previous to his enlistment in the army, was killed in action on July 26, according to a telegram received from Washington yesterday afternoon by his father, John Huebner, 1310 Second avenue. No particulars were given in the message. Private Huebner, who was born in this city 31 years ago, worked as a trainman for the Pennsy, and four years ago was transferred to Pittsburgh, where he became a conductor on the Pittsburgh Division. He registered in the first draft and was among the first men to leave the Smoky City, which was a year ago. He was sent to Camp Lee, Petersburg, Va., for training, and attached to Company L, of the 167th infantry. After being in camp for several months he was sent to France to continue his training, and spent a considerable time at the front before being killed in action. The last letter received by his father was dated July 11, but the young soldier made no mention of being on the firing line, and it is thought that he was sent with his regiment to the battles near Chateau Thierry and Fismes, where the Pennsylvania boys hurled back the enemy. Leonard William Huebner was born in Altoona, Jan. 2, 1887, and spent all of his life in this city, with the exception of the few years in Pittsburgh. He was well known here and after going to Pittsburgh, made many visits with relatives and friends in this city. His mother died several years ago and besides his father, one sister, Miss Anna, at home, survives. Altoona Times, Thursday Morning, October 10, 1918
