Ex-County Commissioner John Hurd died at his residence, 200 Seventh avenue, at 1 yesterday morning of consumption, after an illness lasting a year. Mr. Hurd was born in England, August 12, 1842, and came to America when 8 years old, residing for a number of years in Johnstown. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in the Fifth regiment, Pennsylvania cavalry, serving throughout the war and participating in many engagements. At the close of the war he came to this city and opened up a book, wallpaper and stationery store, his place of business being, for many years, on Twelfth street and later at 1316 Eleventh avenue. Mr. Hurd was twice married, his first wife being Miss Julia C. Hawksworth to whom he was married in 1868. She died October 10, 1897. His second wife, who survives him, was Miss Arminta Gibboney. Besides his wife he is survived by three children, as follows: Mrs. Grace Lembkey, residing in Alaska; Miss Emmarine Hurd of Braddock, and Howard of this city. Mr. Hurd was a Republican and was formerly active in the political affairs of the city and county. He was elected to the office of county commissioner in 1896. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and of the Union Veteran Legion. Funeral services will be conducted at the house tomorrow afternoon at 3.
