IRVIN DIED SUDDENLY AT EAGLE HOME Former Local Hotel Proprietor Expires at Club Room, After Passing Hour With Friends in Conversation and Reminiscences John A. Irvin, aged about 52 years, collector for the City Furniture company, and a former hotel proprietor and clothing merchant, expired very suddenly in the parlor at the Eagles' home, Twelfth avenue, near Eleventh street, at 8:50 o'clock last night. A physician who was summoned pronounced heart disease as the cause of death. Mr. Irwin [sic] entered the home shortly after 7:15 o'clock and was talking with a number of friends about the days when he was in business in this city. Numerous other subjects were brought up and about a quarter of nine, he arose and left that part of the building in which he was talking, starting for the door. Friends thought he was going to his home, but he turned and went into the parlor and sat down. SEEMED IN DOZE. He seemed to be in a doze and was not disturbed until some minutes later when one of the members called to him, but received no answer. An investigation followed and he was found to be dead. The physician, who was immediately summoned, stated that Mr. Irvin had probably died the moment that he sat down. A number of years ago Mr. Irvin conducted a clothing establishment in Altoona, and, upon disposing of this business, purchased part interest in the Carlton hotel, then located at Eleventh avenue and Ninth street, the firm name being Irvin and Devinney. Later Richard Smith retired purchased the interest of Mr. Devinney. [sic] After a few years Mr. Irvin retired from the hotel business. Previously he conducted a cigar store and pool room at Ninth street and Eighth avenue. RETURNED TO ALTOONA. Mr. Irvin retired some years ago and went to Clearfield, where his relatives live. In May he returned to Altoona and accepted a position as collector at the City Furniture company, residing at Pinecroft with R. N. Bell, an intimate friend. It was known that Mr. Irvin suffered from heart trouble, and only Thursday morning he informed Mr. Bell that he intended to visit a physician, as he was unable to travel very far without halting to rest. The remains were turned over to Undertaker N. A. Stevens for preparation for burial. The relatives in Clearfield have been notified, but no word has been received as to what disposition will be made of the body, although friends expect that it will be shipped to Clearfield for burial.
