Altoona, PA, July 1-11, 1999, Obituaries Charles Ivan "Joe" Brown Charles Ivan "Joe" Brown, 63, San Marcos, CA, formerly of Martinsburg, died Sunday evening, June 27, 1999, in Nevada, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born March 3, 1936, in Roaring Spring, the son of Ivan W. and Lillian A. (Gochnour) Brown. He married Naomi Humphreys June 8, 1978, in Las Vegas. Mr. Brown was employed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratories, Pasadena, CA. He was a 1954 graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, Martinsburg, and the Williamsport Technical School. Mr. Brown was a Marine Corps veteran. Surviving are his parents of Sebastian, FL; three sisters: Marjorie Dick of Glen Burnie, MD, Kay Dick of Jacksonville, NC, and Kathy of Hanover, NH; and two brothers: Robert of East Freedom and Wilbur of Columbus, OH. Drass (photo) Bernard C. Drass, 75, 805 N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg, died Wednesday morning, June 30, 1999, at his residence, following an extended illness. He was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Hollidaysburg, the son of the late Benjamin T. Sr. and Mary (Schilling) Drass. He was twice married, first to M. Phyllis Shoff Oct. 6, 1954. She died May 14, 1977. He then married Dorothy J. (Glass) Barkley June 26, 1980, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg. Mr. Drass was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, where he was a trustee of the Barbara Zanker fund, an usher and a former member of the men's club. He retired as a self-employed building contractor. Mr. Drass was a 1943 graduate of Hollidaysburg Senior High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in Company C, 321st Infantry, 81st Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in action Oct. 20, 1944, on Pelelin Island. Mr. Drass enjoyed woodworking and restoring antique cars. He was a member of the Duncansville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post; the Knights of Columbus, Star of the Sea Council, Hollidaysburg, and a fourth-degree member, No. 916, Bishop Garvey Assembly, where he was a former member of the Color Corps. Surviving are his wife, two daughters: Becky D. Markel of Tyrone and Diane of Hollidaysburg; a stepdaughter, Michele J. DeRose of Lakemont; two stepsons, Richard S. Barkley Jr. of Phoenixville and Matthew J. Barkley of Carlisle; three sisters: Mary Byrnes, Joan Lynn and Lillian Zanfina, all of Hollidaysburg; and three grandchildren. "Dub" Holland, 72, Panama City, FL, died Monday morning, June 28, 1999, at his residence. He was born May 7, 1927, in Newry, the son of the late F. Gerald and Wyoma (Ritchey) Holland. He married Martha S. Colyer May 18, 1953, in Altoona. Mr. Holland retired from Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, in 1971. Surviving are his wife; a son, Steven of Panama City; a daughter, Sharon Ham of Panama City; three brothers: George of Lakemont, Robert of Altoona and Wade of Leesburg, FL; three sisters: Jolene Steinbrunner of Duncansville, Virginia Kemp of Hollidaysburg and Leila Helsel of Altoona; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Ling, 77, Osterburg, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Windber Hospital. He was born April 9, 1922, in Osterburg, the son of the late Earl and Lula (Ickes) Ling. He married Anna L. Neff. She preceded him in death. Mr. Ling was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, Pavia. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Ling had been a heavy equipment operator at Vipond and Vipond, Duncansville. He was a member of the Bedford American Legion Post, the Fort Bedford Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the China, Burma, India Veterans Association and the Operating Engineers Local No. 66. "Mickey" Melotti, 72, Richland Township, Cambria County, died Wednesday morning, June 30, 1999, at his home, following a brief illness. He was born Sept. 3, 1926, in Benscreek, the son of the late Robert and Disolina (Mora) Melotti. He married Dora Glenn. He was a 38-year member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Geistown. Mr. Melotti was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a 1944 graduate of Portage High School and a 1950 graduate of St. Francis College, Loretto. Mr. Melotti was employed by Barnes, Saly and Co., Ferndale. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the National Rifle Association. Surviving are his wife of 46 years; three sons: Robert H. of Middleburg, FL, Michael P. of Altoona and Christopher of Eugene, OR; two daughters: Laureen A. of Johnstown and Christina M. of Pittsburgh; a brother, Peter of Mount Lebanon; and two grandchildren. She was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Altoona, daughter of the late W. Scott and Elmira V. (Smith) Eichelberger. She was twice married, first to Charles Alfred Buchanan April 7, 1945. He died Fr. 16, 1974. She then married Albert D. Rodgers May 20, 1978, at Second Avenue United Methodist Church. Mrs. Rodgers was a member of the Second Avenue United Methodist Church. She retired as a monitor from Sylvania GTE in 1978, after 35 years of service. Mrs. Rodgers was a 1935 graduate of Altoona High School. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed ceramics. Surviving are her husband; and three sisters: H. Dorothy Cramer of Pittsburgh and Betty Weston and Dolores J. Burkett, both of Altoona. She had been employed at Paenessa and Diamond Head Nursing Home, Antone's Banquet Center and Bessemer Cement Co. She also did promotions for Idora Park at Conneaut Lake Park. Miss Sekowski was a 1956 graduate of Gallitzin High School. She had hosted a radio show at WPIC and KTX called "Happy Polka Land" and did promotions for Yankee Lake Polka festivals. He was born Feb. 2, 1918, in Manns Choice, the son of Joseph Edgar and Della (Miller) Shoenfelt. He married Marie Campbell Nov. 9, 1940, in Cumberland, MD. Mr. Shoenfelt was a member of First Baptist Church. He retired as a pipefitter/welder from Conrail in June 1979, after 38 years of service. Mr. Shoenfelt enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Surviving are his wife; two sons; Ronald E. and Dennis P., both of Altoona; three sisters: Mary C. Litzinger, Ruth A. Patterson and June E. Wolfe Sr. John W. Wolfe Sr., 74, 208 S. 10th Street, Huntingdon, died Tuesday morning, June 29, 1999, at his residence. He was born Oct. 3, 1924, in Huntingdon, the son of the late John W. and Florence (Wise) Wolfe. He married Edith V. Querry Nov. 28, 1952, at First Methodist Church, Huntingdon. Mr. Wolfe was a member of First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. He retired as a letter carrier from the Huntingdon Post Office in 1986. He had previously been employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad and in the credit office of J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. Mr. Wolfe was a 1942 graduate of Huntingdon High School. He served in the Pennsylvania National Guard and was a veteran of the Korean conflict, attaining the rank of first sergeant. Mr. Wolfe enjoyed local stock car racing. He was a member of the Frank P. Hommon American Legion Post, Huntingdon; a life member of the Standing Stone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Huntingdon; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge, Huntingdon; and a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, Huntingdon, where he served as lodge secretary for 23 years. Surviving are his wife; three daughters: Nancy Speck of Huntingdon RD 1, Debbie Norris of Huntingdon and Cindy Honstine of Huntingdon RD 3; a son, John W. She retired as a registered nurse in 1976, after 30 years of service in private and general duty nursing. Mrs. Frezza was a graduate of Gallitzin High School and a 1938 graduate of Altoona Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of Third Order Secular and the Altoona Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. Raymond Manley Strunk Professor Raymond Manley Strunk of South Brady Avenue in Newton, NC, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 1999, at the Abernethy United Church Retirement Home. Having grown up in Bellwood, PA, the son of the late Raymond and Florence Manley Strunk, he graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, and continued at the University of North Carolina, where he received a master's degree in business. After serving in the U.S. Army as a government auditor, he began his teaching career at Coker College in Hartsville, SC. Moving to Newton, NC, Professor Strunk joined the faculty of Lenoir Rhyne College, where he remained until his retirement after 41 years of teaching. While serving at Lenoir Rhyne, he was named Outstanding Educator of America, received the Roediger Distinguished Service Professorship, the Raymond Morris Bost Distinguished Professor Award, the Opal L. Moretz Alumni Service Award in recognition of his dedication to the principles of education, the state of North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine and Phi Beta Lamda Professor of the Year. Professor Strunk was the choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton for 30 years; at his home church, Grace Reformed United Church of Christ, he served on various committees, was chairman of the Consistory as well as teaching an adult Sunday School class. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Stunk of the home; a son, Rick Strunk of Carrboro, NC; a daughter, Kathy S. Robinson of Newton; two sisters: Suzanne Strunk of Bellwood, PA and Eunice Appleman of Bellwood, PA; and three grandchildren: Allison Strunk, Lindsay Strunk and Wesley Strunk. (Burtnett) Schleich. He married Virginia M. Long in 1940 in Winchester, VA. She died Feb. 19, 1997. Mr. Schleich was a member of Broad Avenue United Methodist Church. He retired as a tool switchman from Bell Atlantic in 1978, after 28 years of service. Mr. Schleich was a 1933 graduate of Altoona High School, and graduated as a third mate from the Pennsylvania Nautical School in 1937 and from the Merchant Marines Academy, Kings Point, NY, in 1938. He was a Merchant Marines veteran of World War II, serving as a captain on a Liberty ship in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean war zones. He Schleich enjoyed golfing. He was a member of American Legion, Park Hills Country Club, St. Stanislaus Koska Brotherhood, the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Kings Point Alumni. Mr. Shaffer was a member of Second Avenue United Methodist Church, Altoona. He retired as a agent/underwriter from Prudential Insurance, taught an insurance course for several years at Penn State Altoona, had previously been employed as a sales manager for Good Chevrolet and had worked for Mellon Bank. Mr. Shaffer was a 1936 graduate of Quaker Valley High School, Sewickley, had attended Robert Morris College and was one of the first people in this area to receive a Charter Life Underwriters degree. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant major in the 28th infantry division and also was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Shaffer enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a former president of Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Blair County, a member of Worlds Greatest Hunters hunting club, the Ashville Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Loretto American Legion, and several Masonic organizations.
