The sad intelligence reached this city by telegraph late yesterday afternoon that Mrs. Bessie Kauffman, wife of Rev. D. D. Kauffman, pastor of Grace Methodist Episcopal church, had died at the Methodist hospital at is 4:15 o'clock. She had been in poor health for some months and on Sunday night, June 6, she was taken to the institution where she was operated on last Friday. She failed to rally from the shock and slowly sank until she passed away. Mrs. Kauffman was the daughter of William (deceased) and Ella Harris, of Shirleysburg, and was aged about 45 years. She was reared in her native town and some nineteen years ago was married to Rev. Kauffman. She came to this city in the spring from Patton when her husband was assigned to the pastorate of Grace church. During her brief residence in Altoona she became endeared to the members of the congregation by her lovable disposition and her activity in church work. She was the ideal pastor's wife and entered into her share of her husband's labors with that spirit of devotion that won esteem and respect of the congregations he had served as pastor. She is survived by her husband and also by her mother, Mrs. Ella Harris, and one brother, William Harris, both of Shirleysburg. The remains will be brought to the city on train No. 15 which arrives at 2:56 o'clock this afternoon and taken to the parsonage on Fourth street. The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
