RETIRED CITY FIREMAN DIES AT HOSPITAL   

  Frederick G. Keiper, 73, retired member of the city fire department 
who was better known as to friends as "Shorty," died at 7:45 p.m. in 
the Altoona Hospital, where he had been admitted Sunday after a lengthy 
illness.  He resided with a daughter Mrs. Alice Roessing of 712 6th 
Ave.  Mr. Keiper was born in Scranton, Pa. August 19, 1884, a son of 
Goswin and Anna Mary Keiper, but had resided in Altoona for the past 46 
years.  He retired from the fire department in 1949 after 30 years of 
service.  Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Rupert, four 
children: Fred A. of Allentown; Mrs. Alice Roessing; George E., also a 
member of the city fire department; and Mrs. Agatha Esoldo; all of the 
city; 11 grand children; and a half sister Emma Fleegle of 
Duncansville.  Funeral Services will be at the N. A. Stevens Mortuary. 
Friends received after 7 p.m. tomorrow.
