MARY (KERLIN) CONDON Widow of George W. Condon, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Veryl DeHaas, 323 Fifth avenue, at 9 o'clock last night after an illness of six months. Mrs. Condon was born July 27, 1871, in Altoona, the daughter of John and Catherine (Koons) Kerlin, and was married Dec. 21, 1892, in Altoona. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Veryl DeHaas, Mrs. Grace Smith and Roland, all of Altoona. Another son, Gordon, preceded her in death ten years ago. He was an automobile race driver, killed in an accident at Dell Delight park, Hollidaysburg. She is also survived by one brother, J. W. Kerlin of Mobile, Ala., and one sister, Mrs. Edward W. Loudon of Altoona, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive. Mrs. Condon was a member of the Eighth Avenue Methodist church, the Ida Mae Fry Bible class and of the Pythian sisters. Condon, 77, of 1202 Broadway, Juniata, died Saturday, October 11, 2003, at Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care. He was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Altoona, son of the late Gordon J. and Margaret S. (Schenk) Condon. Mr. Condon was a graduate of Altoona High School and Lycoming College. He retired as an agent for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Medusa. For more than 30 years, he was a Judo instructor at the Altoona YMCA. His hobbies included sports cars, and he was an avid animal lover. Surviving are a son, Randy G. Condon and wife, Georgiana, of Altoona; a daughter, Autumn Schraff of Altoona; and three grandchildren: Russell A. Condon, Joshua R. Schraff and Cory G. Schraff. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday Oct. 13, 2003, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., Juniata. At the request of the deceased, there will be no funeral service. CONDON Of 908 6th Ave., died at 9:34 p.m. yesterday, Nov. 14, 1976, at Altoona Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Condon retired as a welder from the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1960, after 35 years service. He was born Feb. 6, 1904, in Altoona, a son of George W. and Mary (Kerlin) Condon, and on Feb. 5, 1920, in Altoona married Ruth P. Botteicher, who died July 20, 1972. Surviving are three children, Mrs. Louise Endress, Mrs. Vivian A. McCullough and Gordon J. of Altoona; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Verle DeHaas and Mrs. Grace Bratton of Altoona. DEHAAS Mr. DeHaas, 71, of Altoona died at 3:18 a.m. Sunday, March 1, 1992, at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center, following an extended illness. Mr. DeHaas retired as a foreman from Conrail in 1978, after 37 years' service. He was born Dec. 11, 1920, in Altoona, the son of William R. and Veryl E. (Condon) DeHaas. He married Dorothy Louise Bohner on Oct. 7, 1942, in Winchester, Va. She died April 6, 1991. Surviving are seven children: Katherine Sell of Richmond, Va., Mark B. of Sinking Valley, Lois Elaine Black, Barbara Fischer, Max Christian and Janet Lynn Bucci of Altoona and Michael R. of Tyrone; and 11 grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters and a brother: Cora Conte and Mary Lee Taylor of Altoona, and Phillip of Stratford, Conn. A brother, William, died in September 1991. Mr. DeHaas was a member of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church. He was a former member of Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. DeHaas was a 1938 graduate of Altoona High School. He was a Marine veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific, and received the Purple Heart medal. Altoona Mirror, March 2, 1992 _________________________________________ VERYL LEE (CONDON) DEHAAS Mrs. DeHaas, 87, of 323 5th Ave., died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 1982, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marylee Taylor of Akron, Ohio, following an extended illness. Mrs. DeHaas was a teacher in the Altoona Area School District, having retired from Fairview Elementary School. She was born July 15, 1894, in Altoona, the daughter of George W. and Mary K. (Kerlin) Condon, and married William Roy DeHaas, who died in 1969. Surviving are five children: Mrs. Marylee Taylor of Akron, Ohio; William R. II of Springville, Calif.; John R. and Mrs. Cora Lou Conte of Altoona and E. Phillip of Stratford, Conn.; 27 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Grace Bratton of Altoona. Mrs. DeHaas was a charter member of the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, where she was a member for 55 years and served on the official board. She was also a member of the WSCS and WCTU, George A. Wolf Jr. Chapter of War Mothers, and a Republican committeeman in the 8th Ward. She was a daughter of Thomas and Annie (Trout) Kerlin, and married Dr. David J. Hetrick of Harrisburg, who died 27 years ago. Surviving are a son, Norman, in California, several grandchildren and a sister Josephine, in Altoona. While in Altoona she was a member of the Eighth Avenue Methodist Church. She was born March 30, 1869, in Altoona, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Jane (Martin) Trout. Her husband, Thomas Kerlin, died Nov. 17, 1938. Surviving are five daughters, Miss Josephine at home, Mrs. Harry Rhoads, and Mrs. Walter Tate of Altoona, Mrs. Gladys Hetrick of Harrisburg and Mrs. Alberta S. KERLIN Of 401 South Eighth Street, well known retired contractor of the city, died suddenly at 11:30 o'clock yesterday morning of a heart attack while supervising the construction of a flight of steps in Oak Ridge cemetery. He was born in Patterson, Juanita county, on March 1, 1866, a son of John and Catherine (Koons) Kerlin, but had lived in Altoona since infancy. Mr. Kerlin retired from business some years ago because of his health. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie (Trout) Kerlin; six daughters and one son, Mrs. Marie J. Orr, Mrs. H. L. Rhoads and Mrs. W. B. Tate all of the city, Miss Josephine and T. Raymond Kerlin at home, Mrs. D. J. Hetrick of Harrisburg and Mrs. E. J. Webb of Cardington, O.; seven grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. Mrs. E. W. Loudon and Mrs. George Condon of the city and Wesley Kerlin of Mobile, Ala. Mr. Kerlin was of the Methodist faith. Surviving are one daughter, Virginia Coogle of Dallas, Texas, two sons, Raymond T. of Altoona and John W. of California, five grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Annie E. Kerlin of Altoona and the following sisters, Mrs. David J. Hetrick of Harrisburg, Mrs. Daniel Smeltzer of East Prospect, Mrs. Harry Rhoads, Mrs. Walter Tate and Josephine of Altoona. He was a bricklayer by trade, a member of the Calvary Baptist church the Men's Bible class, and the bricklayers union. Altoona Mirror, July 28, 1953 _________________________________________ CORA LEE (KERLIN) LOUDON Mrs. Cora Lee (Kerlin) Loudon, wife of Dr. Edward W. Loudon of 3721 Sixth avenue and for a number of years active in Republican women activities in the city and county, died suddenly at her home at 1.30 o'clock this morning of a heart attack. Mrs. Loudon had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage last July 3, but was steadily recovering from its effects until Easter, when the heart condition developed. Since then she had declined in health but was able to be about her home and was visited last evening by friends. Mrs. Loudon served as president of the Blair County Women's Republican club for a period of 14 years, until her health intervened last year, and was a charter member of the League of Women Voters, taking an active part in Republican party politics and serving as a member of the Republican county committee for a number of years. She was also an active member of the Ward Avenue Presbyterian church, serving the church as its representative on the board of the Presbyterian home, Hollidaysburg. Mrs. Loudon was also a member of the Altoona Sunshine society and of the Ladies' Aid society of her church. Mrs. Loudon was graduated from Altoona High school in the class of 1897 and continued her education in Irving college, Mechanicsburg, where she was graduated in 1898. Returning to Altoona she taught for four years in the Emerson school of the city. On Oct. 8, 1902, she and Dr. Loudon were married in the Eighth Avenue Methodist church. She was born in Altoona, a daughter of John and Catherine (Koons) Kerlin, who resided at Sixth avenue and Ninth street. Surviving are her husband, one brother, J. Westley Kerlin of Mobile, Ala., and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Laughlin funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening. Smeltzer, retired minister of the Evangelical Church, and a native of Altoona, died last evening after an extended illness in the Geisinger Hospital, Danville. She was born June 17, 1899, a daughter of Thomas and Annie Kerlin, and married Rev. Smeltzer, who served the Faith Evangelical Church in Altoona for a period of three years prior to 10 years ago. Rev. and Mrs. Smeltzer resided in the Evangelical Home in Lewisburg. Surviving are her husband and two sisters, Miss Josephine of Altoona and Mrs. Gladys Hetrick of Harrisburg.
