At 12.45 o'clock yesterday afternoon James W. Kern died at his residence, 1904 Fourth avenue, from the effects of a paralytic stroke. He had not been in good health for some months past, but yesterday morning was stricken and was rendered speechless. His death was a great shock to his family. Mr. Kern was born in Johnstown in 1846. He was a son of George W. Kern, the first burgess of Johnstown, possibly its first postmaster, and at one time owner of the land on which Kernsville is built. When 12 years of age young James with his parents moved to a farm situated in East Wheatfield township, Indiana county, where he resided until about three years ago when he came to this city where he has lived a retired life ever since. When he was 17 years old he enlisted in the federal army and served six months. In 1871 he was married in Indiana county to Miss Mary J. Parker, who survives him, as do these children: Edward H., of Somerset; Frank R., Herbert C., William W., Harry, Carroll, Lucinda, Margaret and May, all of this city. Three sisters are living and one brother: Mrs. Mary Koplin, of Johnstown; Mrs. Mattie Boker, of Leechburg; Mrs. Lucy Dick, of Ebensburg, and Dr. G. W. Kern, of McKeesport. He was a member of the Simpson Methodist Episcopal church. While the funeral arrangements had not been definitely completed last evening, it will likely take place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Oak Ridge cemetery. Morning Tribune, Wednesday, December 13, 1899
