Dr. Ketring was born at Waterside, Bedford county, May 9, 1857, the son of Adam and Susan Teeter Ketring, both deceased. He was the grandson of John Adam Ketring, who came from Germany. The grandmother was a passenger on the same boat and after a stormy voyage of considerable length, they landed in New York and were married and started out on foot for Blair county. Mr. Ketring was educated in the schools of his native county and later took a commercial course in Altoona. In 1883 he purchased a drug store in Williamsburg from the late J. Ross Mateer and for a time employed a registered pharmacist. During that time he studied and qualified as a druggist and has been engaged in the business ever since. He was a Republican in politics and served his town as a councilman and member of the school board and as superintendent of the water department. He was a member of the Portage lodge, F. & A. M., at Hollidaysburg, and of the Orphans Home lodge, I. O. O. F., and camp 311, P. O. S. of A., of Williamsburg. He was a director and vice president of the Farmers and Merchants National bank of Williamsburg. On January 1, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Cecelia Bachtell, of Smithsburg, Md., to which union two children were born, Alverda S., wife of A. E. Eichelberger, and M. L. Ketring, both now deceased. Mr. Ketring was a member of the Lutheran church and one of the foremost citizens of Williamsburg, being identified with practically every movement for the advancement of the town. The funeral, which will be in charge of the Masons, will be conducted at the home on Second street, this Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. L. G. Sheeder, of Portage.
