Sudden Call Which Came to Mr. Lorenz Kimmell Yesterday. HE WAS STRICKEN WITH APOPLEXY While Walking in His Yard He Became Suddenly Ill From the Disease and Died Ten Minutes After the Stroke. As he was moving along the walk in his yard, 1509 Fifth avenue, yesterday afternoon at 3.30 o'clock, Lorenz Kimmel, one of the pioneer residents of Altoona, was suddenly stricken with apoplexy. He sank to the ground and in ten minutes he was dead. Although he had not been in the best of health for several days, his demise was entirely unexpected. The deceased was born near Bruckenau, Bavaria, Germany, May 7, 1825, and was consequently past 74 years of age. He came to America in March, 1852, and lived for a while in Baltimore. Shortly after he took up his residence in that city he was married to Miss Caroline Von Paris, who came across the ocean from Germany on the same ship that brought over her husband. After their marriage they lived at Baltimore several months, afterwards moving to Little York, where they stayed three months, and then, in the year 1854, they came to Altoona. They were among the first settlers, and when they built their home at Sixth avenue and Thirteenth street that was a very lonely locality. A few years later their dwelling was moved to Fifth avenue, to the lot adjoining the late home of the deceased. The dwelling was loaded on trucks, and as there were not enough horses in the little town at that date to haul it away, Mr. Kimmel had to go to the farmers for assistance. Mrs. Kimmel died December 5, 1892. There are eight surviving children and thirty-seven grandchildren. The names of the sons are: Philip, Joseph, John, Lorenz and William J., all of Altoona, and Michael, of Carnegie. There are two daughters - Mrs. Michael Saller and Miss Matilda E. Kimmel, at home. One daughter, Caroline, died in infancy. Ferdinand, the only surviving brother of Mr. Kimmel, resides at Bruckenau, Bavaria. The deceased was a stonemason by trade, but for sixteen years he has lived a retired life. He was a well respected citizen and lived a life of useful activity. He was a member of St. Mary's German Catholic church. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Friday, July 28, 1899 Funeral of Lorenz Kimmel.
