KNEISS Veteran Railroad Man, for Forty Years a Resident of Tyrone Frederick A. Kneiss, one of Tyrone's best as he was one of the town's oldest citizens, died at 1:30 o'clock this morning at his home, corner of Lincoln Ave. and Twenty-third street. His death follows a long illness, Mr. Kneiss having been confined to his bed for the past four years. A complication of diseases incident to advanced age, gradually wore his strong constitution down. The deceased was born in Germany November 5, 1838, and at death he was aged 68 years, 1 month and 6 days. At the age of seventeen, he came to America, first locating at Williamsport where he learned the trade of carpenter at which he was especially proficient. At an early age his ability won him the place of foreman on the middle division of the Pennsylvania railroad. During the Civil War, he worked under Col. Thomas A. Scott at railroad construction in the south, and while engaged at this perilous work, he was captured by the Confederates and was confined for a time in Libby prison. After the war Mr. Kneiss was appointed master carpenter of Tyrone division of the Pennsylvania railroad and he continued in this responsible position until his final illness compelled his retirement. He was held in the highest esteem by everyone who knew him. Mr. Kneiss was a man of unblemished character and a faithful Christian. He was a member of the German Lutheran church of Tyrone. He was also a charter member of Tyrone lodge No. 494, Free and Accepted Masons, constituted in 1871. His wife, whose maiden name was Eliza Jane Elliott, died May 12, 1879. One son is also deceased. Mr. Kneiss is survived by four daughters: Mrs. William C. Snyder, Mrs. Perry A. B. Cupp, Mrs. Harry Snyder, and Mrs. John M. Davis, all of Tyrone. He also leaves two sisters living in Germany. The funeral will take place from the late home of the deceased at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, Rev A. J. Grossmann conducting the services. Burial with Masonic ceremonies, in Tyrone cemetery.
