Early Teacher, Dressmaker Dies

  Mrs. Harriette M. Kurfman, who resided for many years at 1423 1/2 
11th Ave. and engaged in the dressmaking business, died at 3.45 a.m. 
today in the Altoona Hospital after a brief illness.
  Mrs. Kurfman engaged in the dressmaking business before the day of 
ready-to-wear clothing and at one time employed as high as 12 
seamstresses in her establishment.
  She was born in Claysburg, a daughter of George W. and Henriette 
(Shaffer) Mauk, and was educated in the Indiana and Millersville State 
Normal Schools, teaching for a number of years in the Millville School 
in the Allegheny Furnace area.
  Mrs. Kurfman was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Ladies 
Auxiliary to the Altoona Elks.
  Surviving are one brother, John S. Mauk of Wehnwood, and several 
nieces and nephews.
  Friends will be received at the Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Juniata, 
after 7 p.m. Thursday.
