On Tuesday morning, between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock, John S. Lane died, after a long and painful illness, with that insidious disease consumption. Jack Lane, as he was familiarly called, was a brave and faithful soldier. On the 5th of December, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company A, Eighty-fourth regiment Pennsylvania volunteers - the lamented William G. Murray's old regiment. He participated in many of the hard-fought battles of the war; amongst the number were Winchester, Chancellorsville and Port Republic, and at Stony Creek was severely wounded in the left elbow. When the old regiment had been almost wiped out he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. His funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. His remains will be interred with military honors by William G. Murray Post, Grand Army of the Public, and pall bearers will be selected from his old comrades in arms - all members of Company A, Eighty-fourth regiment, several of whom still live in our town and Altoona. Lane was borne yesterday by his old comrades in arms to the Lutheran cemetery and deposited in the grave with military honors. A detachment of twelve men from Company C, commanded by Sergeant Harry Miller, fired the salute, which was as well executed as if fired from one piece. William G. Murray Post No. 39, G.A.R., who turned out almost to a man, and have been tenderly caring for Mr. Lane, though not a member of their organization, deserve much credit, and have proved that their organization is a noble one, and is instituted for worthy motives.
