"Zeke" LaPorte of 808 West 15th Street, Tyrone, a retired school teacher and coach, and one of the town's outstanding athletes in the 1920's and 1930's, died unexpectedly Thursday at his home after an extended illness, at 9 a.m. He was born January 22, 1906, at Tyrone, a son of Harry W. and Jessie M. (Pannebaker) LaPorte. On December 27, 1940, he was married to the former Kathleen Kaufman, at Fairfax, South Carolina. Surviving are the widow, a son Terry L., of Havre de Grace, Maryland, and a daughter, Mrs. Stephen (Nancy) Jusick, of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, two grandchildren, Jill and Stephen Kent Jusick. He was the last of his immediate family. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone, and had served as a teacher in the Sunday School. He held memberships in Tyrone Lodge 494 Free and Accepted Masons, and the Altoona Consistory. He attended Tyrone High School and graduated from Perkiomen and Juniata College. He received a graduate degree at Penn State University. He began his public school teaching career at Mountain Orchard School and later joined the faculty in the Tyrone schools. He retired in 1971 after having taught for 39 years. As a young man he excelled in athletic endeavors. He coached football, basketball and baseball in Tyrone and had officiated in high school and college sports. He served for a term as President of the P.I.A.A. Officials Association. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Getz & Searer Funeral Home, Tyrone, in charge of the Reverend Fred O. Dickerson and the Reverend John P. Martin. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery, Tyrone. Masonic service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., where friends will be received on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. until the service.
