At 12:40 yesterday afternoon Joseph Lewis, a well known and highly respected citizen of Tyrone, passed away at his home on Adams avenue, after a year's illness from paralysis. Mr. Lewis was a son of the late Samuel and Ellen Lewis and was born on the old homestead in Bald Eagle valley April 14, 1857. His boyhood days were spent on the farm, after which he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad company. He rose in the service until as conductor he met with an accident which lost him a foot, after which he retired. He resided in Philipsburg for a few years, but the last twenty-six years of his life were spent in Tyrone. He was a devoted member of the Columbia Avenue Methodist Episcopal church. He belonged also to the Sinking Spring lodge, Knights of Pythias. About thirty years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Ann McMonigal, who preceded him to the grave some years ago. Two daughters, Mrs. William Reel, of Tyrone, and Mrs. Edgar Stouffer, of Huntingdon, survive, as well as the following named brothers and sisters: William, of Tyrone; Mrs. H. R. Woomer, of Bald Eagle; Robert, of Philipsburg; Mrs. Harriet Newman, of Tyrone; Wilson, of Tyrone; Henry, on the old homestead in Bald Eagle valley; Sanford, of Clearfield; Mrs. H. H. Ganoe, of Clearfield, and Samuel, of Punxsutawney. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. Altoona Tribune, January 5, 1915
