Samuel Lewis, an old and highly respected citizen of Bald Eagle Valley, died at the old Lewis homestead, near Dick's [Dix], just over the Blair county line in Centre county, at 1.18 o'clock yesterday morning. Mr. Lewis had been in delicate health the past years but was severely ill only a few days, gangrene, which affected the heart, being the immediate cause of his death. Born November 16, 1823, the deceased was 73 years, 3 months and 11 days old at death. Samuel Lewis was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Lewis, who removed to the Bald Eagle Valley when Samuel was a lad of two years. From that tender age the deceased was a constant resident of the Hickory bottom settlement. About 48 years ago he was married to Miss Ella Beamer. To the union were born fifteen children, eleven of whom survive the father. John Lewis, it will be remembered, died in Tyrone about two years ago. The other three died in childhood. Mrs. Lewis survives her husband, and following are the names of the surviving sons and daughters: William, Joseph, and Wilson Lewis and Mrs. John A. Newman and Mrs. Andrew Friday, of Tyrone; Mrs. H. R. Woomer, of Bald Eagle; Henry Lewis, on the old homestead in Bald Eagle Valley, and Robert, Sanford and Samuel H. Lewis, and Mrs. H. H. Ganoe, of Jersey Shore. Deceased was one of the most substantial citizens of the Bald Eagle valley. He was somewhat retired in disposition, but always took a live interest in the affairs of his community, his township and the country at large. He was a life long member of the Hickory Bottom M. E. church, in whose affairs he was always active. As a professor of Christianity he was consistent, and as a neighbor and citizen he was kind, trustworthy and honorable in all things. In his death the community in which he spent almost all his life loses a man whose good works will be lasting in the memory of those who survive him. The funeral will occur tomorrow at 10 a.m. Services will be held at the Bald Eagle M. E. church, and interment will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church. The services will be conducted by Rev. V. T. Rue. Tyrone Daily Herald, Monday, March 1, 1897
