John Lingafelt died at his home surrounded by his weeping, sorrowing family at 9.45 o'clock on Friday night. His dying was characteristic of his life - calm and peaceful; and like a tired child he slept away a life of care. It was my privilege to be intimately acquainted with him for many years. Almost each season for the last thirty years I was one of the companions who shared his tent, pitched in some lovely nook beside the pure mountain brook on the mountain side beneath majestic pine and oak, with rod and gun to enjoy the innocent, life- giving sport which he so much loved. His memory needs no eulogy at my hands; his acts through a lifetime of sixty one years are treasured in all hearts, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him. Earnest, honest, upright, charitable and conscientious in the discharge of every duty, his loss can only bring to his friends the blessed consolation that he has gone from this world of toil and of care and of pain to enjoy the society of celestial friends. On Easter Sunday at 4 o'clock P.M., followed by almost the entire population, his body was taken to the Lutheran Church, the beautiful house dedicated but last Sabbath free of debt as a temple to the living God - which accomplishment was largely due to his perseverance, determination, money, labor, and, we almost feel like adding, for which he gave his life, for all through the past cold, dreary winter he stood inside and outside of its damp walls when suffering pain even superintending the work. After a fitting testimonial to his worth from his pastor, Rev. Mr. Ryder, he was carried to and with Masonic honors laid to rest in the cemetery adjacent to his residence on the hill.
