LONG, PRR, RETIRED WORKER, DIES SUDDENLY Charles Ottis Long, aged 70, who resided with a daughter, Mrs. Samuel J. Grassmyer of 212 First avenue, and was widely known as a retired machinist for the Pennsylvania railroad, expired suddenly at 11 o'clock this morning after being taken ill a short distance from his home. Mr. Long was returning from a bank and was seen to collapse in front of the home at 224 First Avenue. He was carried into the home and city police and coroner notified. Deputy Coroner Edgar G. Walls said death resulted from a heart attack. The body was removed to the Gilden- Barton funeral home. Mr. Long was widely known throughout the city and among the shopmen, being greeted as Shorty. He was large in stature. He served in the car shop department for 40 years, being retired from the Fourth Street shops as a machinist. Charles Ottis Long was born at Ore Hill, April 23, 1876, a son of John H. and Margaret (Eisenhutt) Long, and came to Altoona as a boy. He was twice married. His first wife, Loretta (Bowers) Long died January 8, 1936, and his second wife, Frances (Poet) Prosser Long, died March 21, 1944. Surviving are a son and daughter by the first marriage, Hazel, wife of Samuel Grassmyer, with whom he resided, and Charles E. Long, Jr., of Altoona, and six grandchildren. A grandson, James G. Grassmyer, a private first class, was killed in action in Belgium, February 9, 1945. Mr. Long was an active member of the Lutheran church and White Cross Lodge, and Knights of Pythias. Friends will be received at the Gilden-Barton funeral home after 7 o'clock Tuesday evening. LONG - Funeral services for Charles O. Long, 212 First Avenue, will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Gilden-Barton Funeral Home, with Rev. George K. Bowers in charge. Interment in Oak Ridge cemetery.
