Long, 89, of Janesville Pike, Tyrone died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006 at 1:55 p.m. at Epworth Manor. He was born July 23, 1917 in Tyrone, a son of the late Octave and Helen (Sheesley) Long. On Nov. 18, 1940 in Pittsburgh he married Elizabeth L. Hampson. She died March 26, 1985. Surviving are a daughter Franette Newman of Bowie, MD, two grandchildren: Thomas and David, a great-granddaughter Madison and a sister Mary Alice Yurick of Mentor, OH. He was preceded in death by a brother Paul B. Long. Mr. Long retired in 1982 from Chicago Rivet and Machine Company, Tyrone as a machinist following 28 years of service. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Howard Gardner American Legion Post #281, Tyrone Elks and the Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder Fire Company. In addition, he was active with the Tyrone Clubman for 35 years and was past president of the Tyrone Teener League, past commander of the Anderson-Denny VFW Post #4559 and the past commander of the Military Order of the Cooties Post #82. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of WWII serving as a Staff Sergeant with the 13th Air Force in the Pacific theatre where he received the Bronze Star Medal. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Joseph T. Orr, Celebrant. Committal will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Feller Memorial Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Christian Wake services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Special Olympics Pennsylvania, 124 Washington Square, 2570 Blvd. of the Generals, Norristown, PA 19403.
