LOTZ, Foreman of No. 1 erecting shop of the railroad company's locomotive works in this city, died this morning at 2:45 o'clock at his residence, 100 Seventh avenue, after a long and severe illness. He had been ailing for the past two years and was confined to the house four months, his disease being a malignant growth on the prostrate [sic] glands. Although his family had no expectation of his recovery his death came unexpectedly, being the result of a painful spasm which brought on collapse. Mr. Lotz was born in the city of Reading, Pa., October 9, 1835, and learned the trade of a machinist in the reading shops. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Stroh at Lebanon, June 3, 1860. In 1862 He came to this city and had been employed in the company's shops ever since, being foreman of No. 1 erecting shop the last fourteen years. He was exceedingly popular with his shopmates and the men in his department, being eminently just and kind in the treatment of all over whom he had control. He was a member of the First Lutheran church ever since coming to the city, and belonged to White Cross lodge K. of P., and of the Royal Arcanum. He is survived by his wife and three sons, James William, Charles and Harry Bartley Lotz. His first born son died in infancy. He leaves two brothers and three sisters in Reading: David F. and Harrison Lotz, and Mrs. Catharine Boland, Mrs. Elizabeth Crum and Mrs. Margaret Hill. The funeral services will be held in the First Lutheran church on Wednesday afternoon. Interment in Fairview cemetery. Altoona Mirror, Monday, January 23, 1893
