MACKEY ANSWERS SUMMONS WAS PROMINENTLY IDENTIFIED WITH THE BUSINESS AND POLITICAL LIFE OF ALTOONA FOR MANY YEARS. Martin H. Mackey, Vice President of the Union Bank and for many years prominently identified with the building business interests of the city, died this morning at 3 o'clock at his home, 805 Eighth avenue. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. He had been in ill health for the past year and his condition was on the decline. On Sunday he spent his last day about the house, taking to his bed on Monday. Although enfeebled by age and sickness he continued to attend to his business interests until a few weeks ago when his condition became such that he rarely left the house. Martin H. Mackey was born in Milesburg, Centre county, on March 17, 1832, and was the son of the late John and Annie Mackey. His parents were of Scottish decent, his grandfather, William Mackey, being a Scotch Highlander. The Mackey family were early settlers in Path Valley, Franklin county. Deceased's grandfather was a veteran of the War of 1812. Mr. Mackey was educated in the schools of Milesburg and shortly after leaving his studies he learned the carpenter trade, being associated with his father. In 1865 he engaged in the planing mill business at Milesburg, in which he followed until the Civil War, when he answered the call of his country. He enlisted in Company F, 148th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was promoted to the position of Sergeant. He served until the close of the war and returned to Milesburg. In 1872 he removed to this city with his family. He became actively identified with the contracting and planing mill business in this city and owned and operated the planing mill on Ninth avenue near Twelfth street where the market company building now stands. He also manufactured caskets. The plant was destroyed by fire fifteen years ago. Later he embarked in the private contracting business, being recently enforced to relinquish the work owing to ill health. Mr. Mackey served his city in public offices, both in the city and county, being elected on the Republican ticket. He served in the city councils for the term of 1884-5 and was later appointed on the board of water commissioners, serving two terms beginning in 1887. In 1891 and 1892 he was a member of the school board, while from 1890 to 1904 he served as county commissioner of Blair. In addition to being Vice President of the Union Bank, which institution he helped organize in 1884, and which office he had held since that time, he was organizer and president of the Altoona Market Company; President of the People's Building and Loan association and a Director in the Altoona Motor Car Company. During his twenty-five years' as head of the People's Building and Loan Association he had an enviable record, not missing a meeting until during the past year, when illness kept him away. Mr. Mackey was united in marriage Oct. 6, 1857 to Miss Sarah Swanger of Mifflin county. His wife together with six children survive as follows: John A. of East Bellview, Allegheny county; Leroy B., Willis E. esq., and Edith, wife of Frank A. Goodfellow, all of this city, and Maud M., wife of William T. Taylor, jr., of Tyrone, and a brother William I. Mackey of Altoona, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Malone, of Fruitvale, Cal. Mr. Mackey was affiliated with the Eighth Avenue Methodist church and was one of the oldest members. He was a member of the E. C. Ward post, G. A. R., No 468, being one of the organizers and one of the last surviving charter members.
