All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ JOSEPH NASON MADDOCKS Joseph Nason Maddocks, 98, Garvey Manor, Hollidaysburg, formerly of 124 Ruskin Drive, died late Sunday evening, March 8, 1998, at Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness. He was born Oct. 9, 1899, in Roaring Spring, the son of Daniel B. and Junie (Brumbaugh) Maddocks. He married Margareta H. Howard June 6, 1922, in Altoona. She died March 28, 1925.* Mr. Maddocks was a member of First Church of the Brethren, where he served as superintendent of Sunday school for several years. He was affiliated with Logan Lodge Masonic fraternity since 1922 and was a member of the Williamsport Consistory, Jaffa Shrine and the Supreme Council Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, a 33rd degree Mason. Mr. Maddocks was inducted into the Altoona Rotary Club in 1936 and served as president from 1942 to 1943. The club presented him the J. P. Harris Award in 1976. He was a member of the board of directors of the Altoona YMCA and a member of the Blair-Bedford Scout Council, where he received the Silver Beaver Award in 1946 and served as chairman of the Advancement Committee for many years. He was one of the original members of the advisory board of the Altoona Penn State Undergraduate Center at its inception. Mr. Maddocks was a 1917 graduate of Altoona High School, attended Juniata College and graduated from Penn State University in 1921. He attained his master's degree in education from Columbia University and did graduate work toward his doctorate degree at the University of Pittsburgh. Surviving are a daughter, Deka Anne Smith of Altoona; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home, Broad Avenue, and 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at First Church of the Brethren. MADDOCKS - Services for Joseph Nason Mad-docks will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Church of the Brethren, Altoona, by Pastor Frank Oessenich. Interment at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at E. MERRILL SMITH FUNERAL HOME INC., 2309 Broad Ave., where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. today, and 1 p.m. until the time of services Thursday at First Church of the Brethren. In remembrance of Joseph N. Maddocks, those who wish may make contributions to the American Heart Association. Surviving are a granddaughter, Sena Anne Berkowitz and her husband, Jerry of Collegeville, Pa.; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Berkowitz of Collegeville.
