No particulars have been received here, but his death is supposed to have been sudden, as he was recently enjoying perfect health and no notice of illness was received. He visited this city a little over a month ago. Mr. Maher was born in County Carlow, Ireland, March 15, 1826, and was, consequently, a few months past 77 years of age. In 1837 he came to this country and located in Blairsville, Pa., where he carried on the business of a tanner until the year 1880, when he removed to Altoona and obtained employment with the Pennsylvania railroad. In 1886 he went to Roanoke, Va., where he has since resided. Mr. Maher married Miss Mary Ann Barr, of Blairsville, about forty-five years ago, and seven children were born to the union. Three of the children died in childhood, and Mrs. Maher died suddenly in Albany, N.Y., this month two years ago. The surviving children are Thomas C. of Roanoke, James P. of Pittsburg, Nicholas D., superintendent of the Clinch Valley of the Norfolk and Western railroad, and Edward, whose home is in Philadelphia. John Maher, of this city, is a brother of the deceased. Patrick Maher was a cultivated gentleman, a most exemplary Christian, honest and honorable in all his relations in life. His remains will be taken through the city tomorrow morning to Blairsville, where they will be interred. Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa., Wednesday Evening, May 31, 1893
