He has been a well known figure there since 1872, when he first went to Altoona. Mr. Major was born in Lewistown, March 19, 1856, the son of Joseph and Martha S. Major, deceased. He went to Altoona at the age of 16 years and first was engaged at selling papers at the depot. Later he began his business of selling sandwiches and light refreshments on trains at the Pennsy depot and was engaged at this during the past forty-five years. His wife, formerly Miss Amanda Witters of this place, died about five years ago. He is survived by one step-daughter, Mrs. George Longenecker, of near Akron, Ohio, and an adopted daughter, Miss Ida Major, at home. Four brothers, George R. Major and William I. Major, both of Altoona, Edward M. of Lewistown and James B. of Philadelphia, and two sisters, Miss Mary Major of Altoona, and Mrs. Margaret Kennedy of Brooklyn, N. Y., also survive.
