David Manley died at his residence in Antis township at 3.20 o'clock, Sunday morning, of a nervous breakdown incident to old age. He was a son of George and Margaret Manley, both long since deceased, and was born on what is now the Anderson farm, north of Juniata borough, on Aug. 3, 1828. From the Anderson farm he moved with his family to his last residence where he has lived since 1831. During his long lifetime, he had perceived many changes which have taken place. He was a grown man almost before Altoona was started. In politics he was first a Whig and was one of the three of four men in Antis township who helped to organize the Republican party in 1856. He filled many local offices. He was a member of the Antis township school board for upwards of 30 years. Prior to the Civil war he taught school for many years. During the Civil war he enlisted in the Third Pennsylvania Heavy artillery and in Company D, 188th Pennsylvania volunteer infantry and participated in some of the severest battles of the war, including the battle of Cold Harbor, from which battlefield he was taken to the hospital and was honorably discharged at the end of the war. He had been a member of the Asbury Methodist Episcopal church for many years. Surviving are three sons and a daughter, Isaac N. and Miss Martha E. Manley of Antis township and J. H. and Attorney W. B. Manley of Altoona. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, the funeral party leaving the house at 1 o'clock and the services will be conducted in the Asbury Methodist Episcopal church at 2 o'clock.
