At 2 o'clock on Sunday morning Mr. Jacob Mardis died at his residence on Eighteenth avenue near Eleventh street, of apoplexy. Mr. Mardis was in the enjoyment of his usual health on Saturday, having been engaged on that day in building a fence between his residence and the one adjoining it. His sudden death was, therefore, a great shock to his relatives and friends. The deceased was in his 68th year and was born in Carrolltown, in Cambria county, coming from there to Altoona about four years ago. He followed the trade of carpentering. He was twice married, and his second wife survives him, and he also leaves two children, a son and daughter, who are Dr. J. S. Mardis, dentist, of this city, and Mrs. Elizabeth Dresser, of Berlin, Wisconsin. He served a year in the Union army during the late war between the states, but so far as we know was not a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was, too, a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church of this city, and was thus prepared for the summons which came so suddenly. He was a man who had many friends in Altoona, and in Cambria county, his former home. Altoona Tribune, Thursday, 24 May 1888, p. 5, col. 2
