Markel, 2316 Sixth Avenue, a Logan Valley Employe, Falls from Open Car SUCCUMBS AT MERCY HOSPITAL W. R. Markel, aged 31, of 2316 Sixth avenue, a Logan Valley railway conductor, had his skull fractured when he fell from an open trolley car on the Broad avenue-Lakemont park line, at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Broad avenue and Thirty- first street. Markel died at 1:20 this morning at Mercy hospital. He was in charge of the car with Motorman Hiram Imler. It was en route from the park and had many passengers aboard. The speed was rather fast and in attempting to swing around several young men standing on the footboard, Markel lost his footing and fell, striking his head violently against the paving. A short distance away the car was halted and the injured man picked up, placed in a motor car and hurried to the hospital. He was admitted at 6:30 o'clock. He was conscious at times but from the first little hope for his recovery was had. The skull was broken near the base of the brain. Markel was employed by the Logan Valley company eight years. He was married and leaves a wife and three children. Altoona Tribune, Monday morning, September 9, 1918, page 1
