Martz, Hollidaysburg, Passes Away James A. Martz, prominent Hollidaysburg citizen and retired contractor and planing mill owner, died at the home of his son, Arthur E. Martz, in Martinsburg, at 11 o'clock last night of the infirmities of old age. He was born in Westmoreland county April 8, 1861, the son of Charles and Jane (Rudolph) Martz. He was married to Myrtle Coons of Hollidaysburg Dec. 22, 1886, and was the father of eight children. Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Arthur E. of Martinsburg, Mrs. R. H. Thompson of Indiana, Pa., Mrs. Claude R. Skinner and Mrs. J. H. Hoover of Hollidaysburg; Mrs. L. L. Steinbach of Lewistown. Dr. Fred H. Martz of Johnstown died in 1940. One child died in infancy. Eleven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren also survive. He was educated in the Greensburg seminary. Mr. Martz was a member of the First Methodist church in Hollidaysburg and a trustee emeritus of the church board; a member and past master of Juniata lodge 28, Free and Accepted Masons, and teacher of the J. A. Martz Bible class. He was always interested in church and civic affairs of his town, having served on the school board. He learned his trade as a carpenter and builder early in life and followed it until his retirement in 1946. Mr. Martz was a construction foreman for the Pennsylvania railroad for a number of years. He resigned to start his own planing mill and contracting business in Hollidaysburg in 1906, which he carried on until his retirement.
